Golf and golfing in Kulai Johor
Just had a game of golf two days ago, at a pleasant golf course in Kulai, some 60 km from Tuas checkpoint.
How can that be far, when the journey is just less than an hour? Jurong to Changi at peak hour is already an hour over 40 km.
It was a good game, or rather another bout of good living. As the weather was good (cludy), the company was great, and of course, our fair share of pars. Followed by a good round of gluttony at Gelang Patah, 100 ringget for 7 dishes and 6 of us. And durian at 5 ringget per kg.
Golf is just a means, or many means towards many ends.
First, a means to hustle, and surface the weaker, or darker side of mankind.
Second, a means to inflate the ego. Or at least in the local context, when people just do not understand why the handicap system was created, or choose not to understand that.
Thirdly, a means to get-to-know, so-called network. That often fails miserably, when that remains the primary aim of golf. Certainly a very shallow manner of networking and an inefficient means to get to your goal.
Fourthly, to close a deal.....hmmm.. I just do not know how that works, really. Acceptable kick-backs?
Fifthly, to keep fit. Sixly, enjoy the game, a sport. Well these are less lame reasons why play golf.
Lastly, and I truely believe so, golf is a means that brings out the real person. Your worst, your best, they just all get spilled out at the Tees, the fairway and the greens. Do you swear and curse when your shots did not turn out right? Do you rejoice on your lucky landing, when the shot was a mis-hit? Do you jump in glee as you have a good shot?
The fool allows golf to consume him/her.
The wise use golf to better oneself.
Golf can be used to mirror life. Or hell.
